Founder of Room to Read, an award-winning international education organisation serving over 23 million children in 43,000 communities in 20 low-income countries. John started Room to Read after a fast-paced global career w/ Microsoft. He built and led the team that has raised over US$750 million of capital. John proudly serves on the Board of Asia Partners -- a Singapore-based and ASEAN-focused technology PE firm - where he is also an investor. He is the Asia Partner for Concentric Equity, a $2BB Chicago-based firm. John is a Board Member of Green Common Holdings and an Advisory Board member of XA, a pan-Asian network of former "Big Tech" executives who jointly fund promising startups and is an Advisor and investor in "abillion". Goldman Sachs named John as one of the world's 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs. He's a five-time winner of Fast Company’s Social Capitalist Award and was selected for the inaugural class of Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum. At the invitation of Bill Clinton he served four terms on the Clinton Global Initiative Advisory Board. He was awarded the inaugural Microsoft Alumnus of the Year award by Bill and Melinda Gates, and appeared with Nick Kristof in the award-winning film Half the Sky. John is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute, was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the TriBeCa Film Festival and was the first non-Asian to be selected as one of Time Magazine’s Asian Heroes. John's frequent media appearances have ranged from Charlie Rose to the Oprah Winfrey Show, and include the Australian Financial Review, BBC, Bloomberg, CNBC's Squawk Box, El Pais, Fast Company, Financial Times, Forbes, Fox News, MSNBC, Newsweek, New York Times, Straits Times, South China Morning Post, Sydney Morning Herald, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. John is the author of three books including Leaving Microsoft to Change the World, and Purpose, Incorporated: Turning Cause into Your Competitive Advantage. The former was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, was a BookSense Book of the Month, and was named by Amazon as one of the Top Ten Business Narratives of 2006. He has also written two children's books based on his lovable Zak the Yak character. He travels constantly from his home in Hong Kong and is always looking for interesting speaking opportunities tied to leadership and the growing movement to align profits with purpose.
