Cherie Axelrod, Western Union, Senior Vice-President, General Auditor. Cherie Axelrod has over 30 years’ experience in finance, compliance, auditing, operations, risk and project management within financial services and telecommunications. Cherie Axelrod joined Western Union in 2012 and oversees the global internal audit function providing audit, compliance and risk management guidance. During her tenure at Western Union, she was the Deputy Chief Compliance Officer and U.S. Settlements Lead and was ultimately responsible for the successful completion of the Southwest Border settlement agreement. She has also led Consumer Fraud, U.S. and Mexico Global Field Operations, Global Compliance Risk, Project Management and several other compliance areas. Prior to joining Western Union, Cherie held various roles for US West and Qwest, including roles within internal audit, finance, regulatory, and program management. Cherie was the divisional CFO for the Consumer & Small Business division of Qwest with revenue of $6B annually. Prior to joining US West /Qwest, Cherie worked for GTE Hawaiian Tel, in the international division, as a pricing analyst supporting multimillion-dollar infrastructure programs, throughout the far east and pacific islands. Cherie has an MBA from Chaminade University, and a BS in Industrial Management / Industrial Engineering from Purdue University. She is married and has two daughters. As the General Auditor, Cherie has the following responsibilities: • Oversee the strategic development, design and execution of the risk-based, worldwide internal audit program. Provide independent and objective assurance to monitor and evaluate WU’s international system of compliance, financial, technology and operational risks, processes and controls. • Functions as a neutral observer to the Board of Directors (Audit, Compliance and Compensation Committees) and Executive Management providing impartial conclusions and options of control performance, risk and recommendations to improve. • Develop a strategic and comprehensive annual audit plan to ensure critical areas of the organization are reviewed at appropriate intervals. Allocate sufficient flexibility in the audit plan to accommodate risk profile changes or respond to urgent events (i.e. ethics reviews, fraud, cyber intrusion). • Ensure critical elements of regulatory requirements and emerging risk areas are met (AML/BSA, GLBA, Dodd-Frank, SOX, Cybersecurity etc.). • Create tools (including advanced data analytics), materials, processes and reporting to effectively administer audits across all functions and business lines of the organization. • Ensure appropriate follow up and monitoring to verify that required remediation efforts are completed. • Interact professionally and frequently with external auditors, regulators, compliance agencies/contractors, legal counsel, court appointed parties etc. Create a collaborative working relationship with all outside constituents.
